Imagine setting a log on fire.  It can take a long time to burn down to ashes, but there are things you can do to increase how fast the log burns down.  A log burning is just a chemical reaction (a combustion reaction!) and it can be sped up in the same ways that any other chemical reaction can be sped up as well.
